After securing qualification against Sweden on Tuesday, Poland found out their World Cup opponents in Doha on Friday evening. Czesław Michniewicz’s charges were paired in Group C, alongside Argentina, Mexico and Saudi Arabia!

Poland’s 26th position in the FIFA world rankings placed them in the draw’s Pot 3, leaving the likelihood of drawing one of the tournament’s top teams, as well as such tricky second-pot teams as Germany, Netherlands and Uruguay.

The draw had a very 1970’s flavour about it. Poland played both Mexico and Argentina at the 1978 World Cup. Those games were the last time that Poland has played competitively against those nations, defeating Mexico 3-1 and losing to Argentina 2-0. Poland have never played Saudi Arabia competitively, but defeated them on three occasions in friendly games.
