Ekstraklasa Champions Lech Poznań have confirmed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Afonso Sousa. The 22-year-old joins the Kolejorz from Belenenses SAD on a four-year deal.
Sousa – or Afonso Gamelas de Pinho Sousa – is a Portuguese youth international, having represented his country on multiple occasions at every age group from U15 level. He is a product of the Porto FC youth academy, having joined initially as a 9-year-old, and then rejoining four years later. He was a part of the club’s 2018/19 UEFA Youth League-winning team, and scored the third in the 3-1 final victory over Chelsea.
Sousa eventually left Oporto for Belenenses in 2020, having played 21 times for Porto’s B-team during the previous season, although Porto initially retained 50% of the player’s rights. Since moving to the Lisbon club he has made 62 appearances, but was unable to help B-SAD avoid relegation to the second tier.
Sousa joins fellow countrymen Joel Pereira, Joao Amaral and Pedro Rebocho at Ulica Bułgarska, and becomes John van den Brom’s first permanent signing at the club.
