CONFIRMED: Fernando Santos appointed as Poland coach

Portuguese coach Fernando Santos was unveiled as the new Poland coach on Tuesday afternoon, agreeing a contract to lead the Białe-Orły until at least the end of the Euro 2024 qualification period.

“Poland is a national team with very good players, one of the world’s best.

“From today I am Polish. I am one of you. We will do everything to provide Poles with lot of joy.”

“For me it is very important to do in Poland what I have done in the past – I want to leave a legacy here, something for the future.”

As well as welcoming the new Selekcjoner and explaining his decision-making process, PZPN president Cezary Kulesza confirmed that Santos will move to Warsaw permanently, and become heavily involved in the national team’s youth program.

“We took into account experience, successes, charisma, working with a group, because it is not an easy job. We also wanted a successful coach.

“I believe that [Fernando Santos] will bring a lot of good not only to our national team, but to the entirety of Polish football.”

The 68-year-old European Championship and UEFA Nations League winner emerged as a late candidate for the job last week, and was seen arriving in Warsaw on Monday afternoon. After a tweet from Polish Sports Minister Kamil Bortniczuk prematurely congratulated the PZPN on the appointment of Santos, Kulesza tweeted a picture with the former Portugal coach ahead of Tuesday’s conference.

Santos will lead the Poland team for the first time on 24 March, at the Fortuna Arena in Prague, where the Biało-Czerwoni take on Czech Republic in the first match of their Euro 2024 Qualifying campaign.
