Spanish appointment for Lechia

Hours after confirming the departure of Marcin Kaczmarek, Lechia Gdańsk moved to appoint Spanish coach David Badia Cequier as their new coach. The 48-year-old will take charge of his first training session on Wednesday, before officially being presented to the media on Thursday.

Badia’s coaching career has taken his through the ranks, firstly as a youth coach at hometown club Barcelona, before moving to become an assistant at Turkish clubs Antalyaspor and Fenerbahce, and then back in his homeland with Almeria. In these positions he worked under famous names such as Philip Cocu, Erwin Koeman and Guti. Most recently he has been in Cyprus, holding the head coaching positions at Ethnikos Achnas, AEK Larnaca and Akritas Chlorakas.

Much of Badia’s playing career was spent in his homeland, with CdF Gava, CE Europa and CE Premia, although he did spend three seasons at Austrian club Sturm Graz between 2001 and 2004.

Lechia currently occupy the penultimate place in the Ekstraklasa table, with 25 points from 25 games. Badia will lead the club for the first time in their home game with Śląsk Wrocław on 1 April.
